Every so often, there is a new neighbourhood that knocks it out of the park with something unique, on trend, and well worth the investment for the discerning buyer. The community of Currie Barracks is exactly that. I was thrilled when a friend chose this uber cool neighborhood for her family.
Currie Barracks has been a Calgary landmark since the city was established. The army base was built in 1934, and remained operational until 1995. It was named after William Currie, one of Canada’s most decorated military figures. Shortly after it closed, the surrounding property was sold to Canada Lands Company, and the area has since been dramatically transformed into a vibrant and desirable community.
Traces of the community’s military past are still evident, but Currie Barracks is now a contemporary urban village that is the result of the vision and expertise of eight award-winning builders. Most of the completed homes have been sold, but there are still a handful remaining for purchase, and a few others coming up for re-sale. The luxury townhomes and detached dwellings range from $800,000 to $1.5 million. The floor plans are spacious and the homes are very unique. This neighbourhood was designed with pedestrian accessibility in mind. Shops, restaurants and other convenient amenities are all available within a 5-minute walking distance.
Additional multi-family dwellings and more retail outlets are scheduled for completion in 2017. City planners estimate that over the next five years, Currie Barracks will be home to approximately 11,000 people. One of its most desirable features is its proximity to downtown Calgary. The location has been a major factor for many buyers to make themselves feel right at home in Currie Barracks.
If you are looking for a trendy neighbourhood with plenty of character in a new part of the city, take some time to explore Currie Barracks. Walk the streets, grab a beer at the Wildrose Brewery and decide if this is somewhere where you could feel at home. What you will discover is truly one of a kind.
